| I have ADHD—for some, just a trendy label; for me, an explanation I'd long lacked. Thanks to the perspective I discovered a few months ago, I can finally try to understand and explain my life. Every stage of my life now makes sense: from my early years, punishments, and homework, to my artistic achievements; every comment on my report cards, every project I undertake, every decision I make. What once seemed random, excessive, or inconsistent is now beginning to form a coherent pattern. My mother sent me to see a psychologist at a very young age. I was too young to understand the results, but I remember them being concerning because they were out of the ordinary. Years later, in 1986, I had to undergo extensive psychological testing to join a very large company with an IT department of several hundred people. The psychologist later told me—with some surprise—that he had rarely seen results like mine. This new perspective doesn't excuse everything, but it gives meaning to my life, to the way I've lived it, and allows me to look back with more clarity, honesty, and acceptance. |
